As a human, her name was Katerina Petrova, and she came from Bulgaria. She is what The Originals call a Petrova doppelganger, a human that can be sacrificed to break the curse that binds the vampires to the night. Before she could be sacrificed, a vampire took pity on her and helped her by turning her into a vampire. Katerina soon fled Europe altogether, moving to America. Before her arrival at Mystic Falls in 1864, she changed her name to Katherine Pierce.

Season 1
In the episode 'Lost Girls', we are first introduced (visually) to Katherine Pierce, who is the vampire that Damon and Stefan Salvatore both fell in love with when they were still human in 1864. Elena Gilbert is Katherine's doppelganger, something that draws both of the brothers to her when they return to Mystic Falls.
Katherine was a playful and flirtatious young woman, but was also cold, calculating and possessed a wicked streak within her. Arriving in Mystic Falls in 1864 to reside with the Salvatores, she initially hides being vampire from both Stefan and Damon, posing as human orphaned during the Atlanta Campaign.[1] She took delight in compelling their minds and playing them against each other to see who could win her over romantically. She said that her long-term plan was for the three of them living together, though present-day evidence suggests this failed dramatically.[2] Damon tells Elena that Katherine died in a tragic fire,[3] and also alludes to the possibility of her being one of the 27 local civilians trapped in old Fell's Church and burned alive during the Battle of Willow Creek.[4] She was trapped in the burning church, but the 27 civilians were actually vampires.[5]
145 years later, Damon reveals to Stefan that Katherine is not actually dead. All 27 vampires were entombed in a mummified state below the ruins of old Fells Church.[6]
Katherine had a handmaiden named Emily, a powerful witch as well as Bonnie Bennett's 4th-great grandmother through Grams.[7][8] Pearl revealed Katherine was never in the tomb. A guard, obsessed with her, agreed to let her escape in exchange for turning him into a vampire. Anna tells Damon she last saw Katherine in Chicago in 1983 and she knew where Damon was and did not care.[9]
Towards the end of the Season 1 finale, 'Founder's Day', Damon talks to 'Elena' as he's leaving the Gilbert house and he kisses her but they are stopped by Jenna, who tells her niece to get inside. Once in the house, 'Elena' encounters Jonathan Gilbert and they converse about the device. Suddenly, 'Elena' sees his ring and grabs a kitchen knife, cutting off his fingers and he realises that 'Elena' is, in fact, Katherine, before she stabs him in the stomach as Elena returns home.
Season 2
At the start of the season premiere, 'The Return', Elena finds John on the kitchen floor and phones for an ambulance, as Katherine watches her from behind. John tells her there's someone else in the house and she goes to investigate but Katherine soon leaves. After John is taken to the hospital, Stefan, Damon and Elena realise that Katherine was invited in the house and Damon tells them that he kissed Katherine thinking it was Elena.
Katherine later arrives at the Lockwood mansion and threatens Bonnie, before Stefan stops her. She admits to him that she came back for him but he says that he hates her, which causes her to stab him in the stomach with an iron candle holder. Stefan tells Damon that Katherine will try and tear them apart and that they have to stay united against her. Later, Katherine visits Damon at the boarding house and she seduces him. He gets her to stop and asks her to tell him the truth - the truth being that she never loved him and that it was always Stefan that she loved. This leaves Damon devastated. Afterwards, he goes to see Elena but when he tries to kiss her, she rejects him and says that she loves Stefan, using words that echo Katherine's. He flies into a rage when Jeremy intervenes and snaps his neck before leaving. However, Jeremy is still alive as he was wearing John Gilbert's ring and Stefan admits that Katherine got to Damon and undid everything that was good about him.
In 'Bad Moon Rising', Damon, Elena and Alaric travel to Duke University to find out what Isobel knew about werewolves and Damon later hands Elena a book labelled 'Petrova'. He tells her that Katherine's real name was 'Katerina Petrova' and that she originally came from Europe. At the end of the episode, Katherine surprises Caroline in her bedroom. In 'Memory Lane', she uses Caroline to disttract Elena so that she can spend the day with Stefan at the boarding house and tells him about the werewolves. This fails and Elena comes face-to-face with her ancestor when she arrives at the boarding house, but Stefan and her pretend to break up so it will seem that Katherine is getting her own way. In 'Kill Or Be Killed', she appears at the end of the episode and Mason informs her that he has secured the moonstone. In 'Plan B', she asks Mason to tell her where the moonstone is. After Damon has killed him, he phones her to gloat and she informs him of her back-up plan and plans to use Matt as a means of triggering the 'Lockwood curse' in Tyler. In 'Masquerade', she shows up at the Lockwood mansion with Lucy and is led to a bedroom by Caroline but finds she cannot escape. A fight ensues between her and the Salvatore brothers and they find that every time she is injured the same happens to Elena. Eventually she obtains the moonstone but collapses and is placed in the tomb. Damon seals her inside but not before she tells him that Elena is in danger.
In 'Katerina' she tells Elena about her life as a human and says that she was banished from Bulgaria for having a baby out of wedlock. She found herself on the run from a nobleman named Klaus and believing that Rose would take her back to him, she hanged herself and later fed off the old lady who owned the cottage, thus completing her transition into a vampire.
