Katherine Pierce is the young woman who both Damon and Stefan were in love with in 1864 Mystic Falls, and is the main antagonist of the second season. Her name is officially Katerina Petrova and she is from Bulgaria (Europe) turned into a vampire in the late 15th century. Vindictive and manipulative Katherine manipulated both of the Salvatore brothers into believing she loves them, until she turned them into vampires and escaped the town. Damon spent 145 years loving her, but after she told him she never felt something for him, and that she always loved Stefan, he doesn't care about her anymore. Currently, she is trapped in the tomb. At first, she was trapped because of Bonnie's spell, but later because she was compelled to stay there by the Original Elijah. Like the Originals, Katherine shows high resistance to vervain. But in "The Dinner Party", she is released from the tomb because when an Original compels a vampire and they die, the compulsion wears off. She is then seen using Damon's shower and tells him that she wants to help Elena and kill Klaus. During the episode "the house guest" she proves her loyalty to the brothers by making a plan to help "tie up our main loose ends" by killing Lucca and his father after they try to free Elijah. she later confromts Damon about her deal to kill one Salvatore brother in exchange for her release drom the tomb and she chose Damon, though she shows some remorse for this decision at the end of the episode.
